Update 9/19/17

From Jennifer Lund, Executive Director

I’m writing to let you know that Hero Dogs Hazel Ying Lee (“Hazel”) has been placed as a skilled home companion to a veteran. While Hazel did well with her early training, unfortunately she does not have the confidence to take on the public access role of a service dog. The job of a service dog is a difficult one, and the dog’s partner will need to depend on the dog in many stressful and demanding circumstances. As special a dog as she is, Hazel just would not be able to provide this support to her partner in public.

As a skilled home companion, Hazel will have the opportunity to utilize her training to support a veteran in a more consistent environment. Hazel will be living with and aiding a 26-year veteran of the US Navy and her husband, also a 30-year Navy retiree. She will be able to assist her veteran with retrieving, balance, and mobility tasks within the home. They have already completed their initial training, and will complete additional follow-up training over the next six months as they form a bond and become a team. We anticipate that they will be recognized at our graduation ceremony in 2018.

Please know that despite the fact that Hazel did not become a service dog, your contribution to Hero Dogs for her puppy sponsorship is no less a factor in our ultimate success. Hazel touched the lives of literally thousands of people in her tenure as a puppy in the Hero Dogs program. Every time she went out in public with her puppy raiser, attended an event, visited children at a school, or gave a demonstration, Hazel helped educate the public on the needs of heroes with disabilities and the ways that service dogs can help to fulfill those needs. Without donors like you, Hero Dogs could not provide these exceptional dogs to our heroes. You have helped us repay, in the best way we know how, our debt to those who defend our freedom and provide for our security.
